It’s hard to imagine that an entire year has passed since I self-published Of the Stars and Sea—my heart book and the story that made some of my biggest dreams come true. From the very moment I saw an image of Rowenya rumaging through a treasure chest in my mind, I knew her story was special. When I finally got the courage to tell my husband about it, he had told me, “This is the one.” And when I told my grandma about it, she said the same thing. I was at a point in my career where I was truly ready for what was next. Now, don’t get me wrong, Of the Stars and Sea didn’t have some viral, epic release. I fought tooth and nail (and spent a shit-ton of money) to get her visible during a time when it felt like everyone and their mother was publishing (which, yay! the world desperately needs creative souls and their art). It was a wild and incredibly vulnerable time for me that I might share more about at some point, but what I can say now is that I am immensely proud of this story and what it has become with the push of my brilliant editor, @maeday_reads Very soon Of the Stars and Sea will sail to bookstores all across the U.S. which has been a career long dream. I’m already planning little road trips to see her in as many stores as I can! While the indie experience of launching this book was insane, I know in my heart she hasn’t come close to reaching her peak yet. As my agent, @katiereed_literary , says, “She hasn’t even had her moment. Just you wait!”

There is so much advice out there for writers, it often feels overwhelming to even start. I used to watch and read hours and hours worth of content to learn how to become an author and after 11 books, I can confidently say the best piece of advice I’ve ever received is there is NO right way to write (thank you V.E. Shwab). Writing is a creative endeavor and that means the process of creating ebs and flows. What works for you now might not work for any of your future books. I know some authors who edit as they write. Others engage in fast drafting. I, myself, started out as a pantser, then I become a hard-core plotter and now I fall somewhere in-between. The only thing you need to do is get words onto the paper. So, try on different strategies and see which one feels best suited for your current needs (and the needs of the story).

A little R&R before I head into the last leg of drafting book two. So much has happened while writing this book, it almost seems bizarre that I’ve been able to write any words at all.

I love these characters so much and they’ve helped me navigate some torrential downpours in my life. I have cried with them. Laughed with them. And raged with them. It’s still so wild that half their journey is already over with only 1.5 books left to write.

Anyways, I hope you’ve had a restful weekend. I’m savoring these final hours of respite before chaos ensues. Wish me luck!

I wrote four books while in graduate school/residency because I knew writing was my dream and that I couldn’t stay in the healthcare field forever. And before you think I slacked at my previous job…

Yes, I still graduated in the top 5% of my class.

Yes, I still got a residency position at one of the top hospitals in the country.

But I also told myself yes. I stopped making excuses to chase my dream. I stopped saying I was too tired. I stopped listening to the noise.

I started taking action. Small steps—often.

Every time I had the chance to write, I knew it needed to be productive, so I started outlining (in detail) the books I wanted to write. I started with a bird’s eye view outline then moved to chapter by chapter outlines because I needed to know exactly what I would be writing when I would sit down during those highly coveted writing sessions.

It took a while for me to finish my first few books. I said no to social outings (not all the time, but enough to make a difference in staying true to my self-committment).

I also stopped staring up at the looming mountain top and instead focused on every small step that would get me there. Every 15-minute writing session helped me chip away at that first 98K word novel. Every session had meaning even if they weren’t the most “productive” because they all meant I was saying yes to the dream.

So, no matter what dream your chasing after, start getting used to saying yes instead of no. Stop making excuses. Start small. Climb to the first base camp, then the next, and the next until you finally reach the top.

I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve wanted to quit as an author. Not because I didn’t love the work, but because it has been so incredibly difficult to amplify my voice. I’ve tried everything over the years (ads, grinding on socials, collabs, etc) and there were so many times when I failed. My books went nowhere. And I was stuck working a job that sucked the life from me (and no that’s not an exaggeration). But I kept going. Kept putting one foot in front of the other. And while there wasn’t a single moment when everything clicked, there were a lot of smaller moments that finally came together. I still have a lot of big dreams to chase, but right now I’m living one of my favorites ❤️ Keep moving forward.
